2 1/2 weeks to catch up on

Sean got sick the last day of school, which was the last time that I posted here.  He was fine at school that day and he was fine for most of the afternoon, but as the night wore on he started feeling more and more sick and eventually he threw up and was miserable for a couple days.  He is better now, but Chris was the next to be sick, then Eleanor, then Chloe, and last Lily.  Lily didn't actually throw up, but she's had some other "issues", I will spare you the details.  I am counting my blessings since I am the only one who was spared...so far!  We are all just now starting to feel back to "normal".  This flu/virus/whatever has been a real bummer to the beginning of our Summer break.  I am hoping we can be done with this sickness so we can enjoy the rest of the Summer and especially Sean's birthday and our trip to visit Papa and Grandma coming up soon and my sister's visit, which is also coming up soon!

Lily fell asleep on me a couple days ago!  It was so sweet!  She doesn't do that very often anymore, but she wasn't feeling well and she needed the rest.
I decided to take a gamble so to speak and I ordered two cloth pocket diapers from alvababy.  They are a company in China.  I really didn't want to order from China, but I have heard so many good things about their diapers and they ship free and their prices are great!  Also, they have bamboo inserts and I really want to start using all bamboo and stop using the microfiber, so I went ahead and ordered two diapers and 6 bamboo inserts.  I am very happy with my purchase and it only took a week and a half for my diapers to get here all the way from China!
I had to get a patriotic diaper for the 4th of July!
I have to say there is just something therapeutic about hanging my clean diapers out on the line to air dry in the sun.  Makes me happy to see them gently blowing in the breeze.

I mentioned in my post about washing the washing machine that I was going to make my own laundry detergent and I did!  I mixed 1 cup super washing soda, 1 cup borax, and 1 bar grated fels-naptha soap.  Grating that soap took some time, but it smells so good!  However, in the future instead of the soap I am going to use 1/2 cup of oxyclean powder.  Much easier to mix and it has a softer, pleasant smell also and it takes the place of the soap.  So far I really like the way it cleans our clothes!  I use between 2 tablespoons and 1/4 cup of laundry powder in each load and I pour 1/4 cup of vinegar into the fabric softener dispenser and our clothes smell clean and feel soft!

  2. The diapers are cute! WAy to go, I just can't get excited for myself to use cloth. Seems like so much work. But I'm glad they work so well for you!

  3. Being sick is not fun! Especially when school's out and it's time to enjoy the summer. Glad you all are better! You totally inspired me with that post about cleaning your washer, that is awesome! Mine has some gross spots, but they are parts that don't touch the clothes so I'm debating whether to tackle that job someday or not. The washer, I don't know how old it is. The people that lived here before us were here for 20 yrs., and they left it for us and we've now been at this house for 5.5. At least I can truthfully say it doesn't look any worse since we've been here, I don't know what they were doing that made it so grimy. (At the top of the washer cylinder there is this green gunk, and then of course the usual lid crud, and then also the spot to put bleach in has always been dusty. The thing I really wonder about is the green stuff, no idea what it is... so not sure if I want to even mess with it... but your washer looks so beautiful! I do love cleanliness.) Super cool that you made your own soap! I have been meaning to try that for like a couple of years now. I like your idea of subbing the powder oxyclean, that might be a turning point for me, as grating soap just never had a fun ring to it. Glad that you are liking the cloth diapering so much! I'm sure there is definitely a feel of productiveness to see them out on the line like that!

  4. I would guess the green gunk is an over abundance of fabric softener and/or laundery detergent build up? It could be mildew/mold? I don't blame you for not wanting to tackle it, but it might be worth it ;)
